DIA's 'Inside/Out' Program Coming To Plymouth In April

An official kick off is planned for April 20 at the Plymouth Arts and Recreation Complex at 650 Church Street starting at 6 p.m.

PLYMOUTH, MI — Each July, the city of Plymouth hosts one of the largest gatherings of creatives in metropolitan Detroit with “Art in the Park.” This year, residents won’t have to wait quite as long for a little taste of art.

Plymouth is participating in the Detroit Institute of Arts’ Inside/Out program starting on April 14. That’s when a dozen reproductions of art masterpieces will be installed at various locations around the community. An official kick off is planned for April 20 at the Plymouth Arts and Recreation Complex at 650 Church Street starting at 6 p.m.

The Michigan Philharmonic will perform at the kickoff event as will the Downtown Music Academy and the Main Street Opera Theatre.

“Art has the powerful ability to unify, and Inside|Out allows us to bring people together outside of the museum walls,” said DIA Director Salvador Salort-Pons. “We see ourselves as more than a museum; we use art to encourage connections and improve understanding among our diverse communities.”

Plymouth will host the reproductions from April to July along with 10 other communities. Another group of metropolitan Detroit communities will host the art reproductions from August - October.

It’s DIA’s eighth straight year with the popular program. This year, the DIA will expand the number of installation sites from approximately 80 to 120 per three-month season. The DIA is also collaborating with the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History for the first time to include 10 reproductions of objects from their permanent collection.

Another 2017 highlight is a return exhibit at Hines Park that will be installed along a six-mile stretch of Hines Drive, which becomes a motor-vehicle-free area on Saturdays during warmer months.
