PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, MI — Plans for a new Meijer store in Plymouth Township are moving forward after developers and township officials reached an agreement.

The new 159,000-square-foot Meijer store, which will include a pharmacy and garden center, would be located at Five Mile and Beck roads. Construction is expected to start sometime this spring.

Township officials initially denied the Meijer proposal during a June meeting last summer, mainly citing traffic concerns. Many residents also pushed back on the project during that meeting, arguing there's already heavy traffic in the congested area.

Meijer and its developer, Redico, field a lawsuit last August, arguing township officials denied a request that met township's requirements for approval during the planning process.

As part of the agreement, which was authorized by Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Brian Sullivan, Meijer would have to improve traffic in the area by making changes to public roads based on a traffic study prepared in June 2023, according to the consent agreement.

Some of those changes might include:

  • Adding a right turn lane at the intersection of Five Mile and Beck roads
  • New traffic signal at the intersection of Five Mile and Johnson Creek
  • Left turn signal at Five Mile and Johnson Creek Drive east of Meijer Drive
  • Right turn lane at the proposed at Meijer Drive

The retailer and developer must also make a $100,000 contribution to the township’s tree fund and build a new 8-foot concrete bike path that's adjacent to Five Mile Road, according to the consent agreement.
