New Road Markings Painted in Time for First Day of School
New markings on Washington Avenue should give clarity to parents dropping off students at Royal Oak Middle School.
The barricades that had closed Washington Avenue all summer have been removed in time for the first day of school at Royal Oak Middle School.
Parents dropping off students on Sept. 3 will notice the removal and replacement of deteriorated curbs and gutters, the installation of Americans with Disabilities Act compliant sidewalk ramps and new road markings.
Those that haven’t been on this well-traveled road between 11 Mile and Crooks in the last few weeks, can check out the photos above to familiarize yourself with the traffic pattern, which now includes a left-turn lane between Austin and Park avenue.

Washington has always been a two-lane road but travelers took advantage of extra room, converting it to a four-lane road at times, according to City Engineer Matt Callahan.
"People could pass other cars and parents would double park in front of the middle school," Callahan said. It was a safety concern.
