Oakland County Residents, Have You Tested Your Home For Radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer, and the EPA warns that Oakland County homes may have elevated radon levels.

OAKLAND COUNTY, MI — Have you tested your home for radon? It's a test that all Oakland County residents should do - and it only costs $5, according to a press release from the Oakland County Health Division.

First of all, what is radon? Here's a quick radon refresher: It's a radioactive, invisible, odorless gas. It's usually harmless - outdoors. However, radon indoors is another story. It can accumulate inside a home - and all that exposure can put you on the fast track to lung cancer. In fact, radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). And here's another thing the EPA wants us to know: There is moderate potential for elevated radon levels in Oakland County homes.

So, how can you test your home? Swing by the Oakland County Health Division and pick up a kit for $5. "Oakland County Health Division is offering radon test kits at half price to help Oakland County families protect themselves and their loved ones,” Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said in a statement.
