Royal Oak Police And Fire To Battle For Cancer Patient
The Royal Oak police and fire departments will square off on April 22 in a charity hockey game to benefit a local cancer patient.

ROYAL OAK, MI — If you’re looking for a living embodiment of community spirit, Clawson’s Carrie Chambers just might be it. Over the years, she has served as a middle school PTA president, raised money for a family burned of its home and been named Clawson’s Volunteer of the Year.
But now Chambers, 42, is in need of a little help herself as she continues to battle cancer. That’s why Royal Oak police officers and firefighters will face-off in an April 22 “Guns and Hoses” charity hockey game. All proceeds will go to Chambers and her family.
“It was apparent from what I heard about her how big of a positive impact she and her husband have had on Clawson,” firefighter Tony Cattin recently told the Royal Oak Daily Tribune. “Now we have an excellent chance to give back to her after all she has give to others.”

The game takes place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 22 at the 500-seat John Lindell Ice Arena in Royal Oak. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $10, or $12 at the door. Tickets can also be purchased at the Royal Oak Police Department and at all three of the city’s fire stations.
Chambers is a lifelong resident of Clawson. A mother of three, she was diagnosed last year with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, reconstructive surgery and radiation treatment, the Royal Oak Daily Tribune reported.

Now in its seventh year, the charity hockey is organized by police Sgt. Patrick Stanton and firefighter Tony Cattini, the newspaper reported. Since the game began, the Royal Oak police and fire has raised $47,500. Funds have gone to families of a fallen state police trooper and a Madison Heights police officer who died from illness, the Daily Tribune reported.
“We’ve come close to selling out the arena in past years,” Stanton told the newspaper. “But I think this is the year to finally make it happen.”
