Royal Oak Police Recover Handgun After High Speed Chase

Royal Oak officers made a routine traffic stop near Campbell Road and 11 Mile that turned into a pursuit after suspects sped away.

ROYAL OAK, MI — A gun was recovered following an early morning police pursuit on March 15, according to Royal Oak Police Department reports. Shortly after 2 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle with three occupants in the area of Campbell Road and 11 Mile for a traffic violation.

While the officers were investigating the driver, he put the vehicle in drive and fled from the traffic stop southbound on Campbell Road towards 10 Mile Road. The vehicle fled onto I-696 from 10 Mile at a high rate of speed and exited onto Greenfield Road moments later. Royal Oak officers terminated the pursuit in the area of Greenfield Road and 9 Mile Road after the vehicle began reaching speeds of up to 80 MPH.

During the pursuit, one of the occupants threw a handgun out the window of the vehicle. The handgun was recovered by Royal Oak officers. No injuries were reported. Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
