Royal Oak Settles Personal Injury Case

Woman Receives $20,000 After Fall On Bus

Royal Oak City Commissioners approved a $20,000 settlement with Stephanie Groth who fell off a motorized scooter while riding one of the city’s senior buses in 2015. Monday’s settlement came on the advice of the city’s insurance lawyers. Groth, 77 at the time of the incident, fell when the driver made a sudden stop.

In a memo to city officials detailing the incident, Royal Oak City Attorney Dave Gillam says Groth “fell off her motorized scooter (on the bus) when the driver had to stop quickly to avoid a collision. She was transported to Beaumont Hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and subsequently released.” Groth says the bus driver failed to secure her scooter; the bus driver says she refused to allow him to secure the scooter.

Groth claims the accident drastically reserved her her ability to walk unaided and filed a lawsuit against the city in Oakland County Circuit Court. Monday, Groth and the city settled the case for $20,000.
