Royal Oak Symphony Orchestra To Perform 'Northern Lights'

ROYAL OAK, MI — The Royal Oak Symphony Orchestra will present its first concert of the 2017-2018 season on Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. at Royal Oak Middle School, 709 N. Washington Avenue.

The concert, themed “Northern Lights," will feature Symphony No. 2 by Jean Sibelius and Midsommarvaka by Hugo Alfven, a Swedish rhapsody based on folk music themes. Music Director John McLaughlin Williams will also perform the violin solo in Vivaldi’s Autumn from The Four Seasons.

Williams is a four-time Grammy Award nominee and the first African-American conductor to win a Grammy. He received a Grammy Award in 2007 for his performance of Messiaen’s Oiseaux Exotiques, recorded with the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and pianist Angelin Chang.

Guest conducting appearances by Williams have included: the Detroit Symphony Orchestra; Colorado Symphony Orchestra; Chicago Sinfonietta, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Cayman Islands Arts Festival, and the Britt Festival Orchestra.

Tickets can be purchased on-line (credit card) or at the door (check or cash). Adult tickets are $15, senior or college student tickets are $12, and age 18 and under are free.
