ROYAL OAK, MI — Election Night is going to busy for Royal Oak voters. They will be asked to select a mayor and four city commission members as well as decide on charter questions and a school bond issue.

Mayor Michael Fournier is looking to fend off a challenge from Mike Skinner. Incumbents Sharlan Douglas and David Poulton are looking to retain their commission seats while Kim Gibbs, Richard Karlowski and Melanie Macey are making their own bids for the seats.

In addition, the commission has one seat open for a partial term that will end on Nov. 25, 2019. Two newcomers, Brandon Kolo and Randy LeVasseur, are running for the position.

Royal Oak has two proposals to change the city’s charter language. The first would remove sections made obsolete when Royal Oak adjusted the date and time commissioners and the mayor start and end their terms of office from the first Monday in December to the third Monday in November in the year of their election.

In 1921, Royal Oak residents set a requirement that any public improvement costing more than $1,000 can only be approved after drawings, profiles, and estimates are submitted to the commission. The second proposal would eliminate that language from the the city charter and allow the Commission to set the limitation.
