Royal Oak Women is Finalist for Senior Impact Award

Royal Oak resident and St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center (SVSFC) volunteer Luella Jahsan is one of only two tri-county residents recently named as one of 10 finalists for Priority Health Care System’s 2013 Senior Impact Award which annually honors four Michigan residents who are making an impact in their communities.

Each year Priority Health partners with the United Way and the Volunteer Centers of Michigan to recognize four volunteers from across the state who improve the communities where they work and live. Along with the recognition, a donation of $1,000 is made to the nonprofit organization where each Senior Impact honoree volunteers. 

“We are honored to have Luella as part of our team and in fact, she is our 2013 Volunteer of the Year. So we are especially excited about the possibility of her winning this meaningful award,” said Diane Renaud, Executive Director for the SVSF Center’s Education Experience, a personalized one-on-one tutoring program. “The difference she has made in helping children to read and adults obtain their GED has changed the lives of hundreds of our residents. We’re hopeful that tri-county residents will show their support for one of their own dedicated volunteers by voting for this remarkable woman to win this award.” 

Since 2009 Jahsan, a 30-year retired Oak Park school teacher with a Master’s Degree in Reading /Literacy, has served as an individual tutor to adult students at the Center, devoting 3,000 hours per year helping them obtain their GED.

“Luella embodies all the characteristics of what is outstanding in a human being – integrity, kindness, generosity, dedication and commitment,” said Renaud.
