Suspect Arraigned In Royal Oak Police Standoff Case

Clyde Thomas Kubiak is facing charges of domestic violence and assaulting, resisting and obstructing a police officer.

ROYAL OAK, MI — A 41-year-old Royal Oak man was arraigned Wednesday on charges of domestic violence and assaulting, resisting and obstructing a police officer in connection with an early morning incident Monday in the 900 block of N. Connecticut Avenue.

Clyde Thomas Kubiak appeared before Royal Oak District Court Magistrate Donald Chisholm and faces up to 93 days in jail on the domestic violence charge and up to two years and a $2,000 fine for the assaulting, resisting and obstructing a police officer charge. Kubiak’s bond was set at $10,000 and he is not to have contact with the victim. According to a report in the Detroit News, Kubiak has a criminal history, including a conviction for false report of a felony.

He was arrested by police early Monday morning after allegedly threatening the safety of a woman and a child inside the N. Connecticut Avenue home. According to the Royal Oak Police Department, Kubiak tried to pry a car door open after allegedly assaulting the woman and chasing her into a vehicle.

Police reports said the woman called police while inside the vehicle and then Kubiak fled back into the home. Royal Oak officers arrived minutes later, entered the home and quickly located a 10-year-old, then took the child to safety.

The Southeast Oakland SWAT Team was called in to respond. Kubiak still refused to respond to officers who were attempting to make contact with him by phone and loudspeakers. Tear gas was later shot into the home and Kubiak gave himself up at about 5:30 a.m.

Police said Kubiak had access to a gun and a sword collection during the confrontation. But no injuries resulted from the incident.
