Grass Lake Woman Charged With Writing Bad Check to Jeweler
Police say the woman bought $1,500 worth of jewelry from Accent Jewelers with a bad check.

A 32-year-old Grass Lake woman has been arraigned on charges of writing a bad check for more than $1,500 to pay for jewelry at a downtown Saline business.
Jayme Lynn Schaffer was arraigned on the charge of passing a check with non-sufficient funds, $500 or more. The felony charge carries a penalty of up to two years in jail and fines of up to $2,000 or three times the amount payable. A preliminary exam was held Tuesday in Washtenaw County 14A-1 District Court.
According to a police report, Schaffer wrote a check for $1,547.60 to Accent Jeweler on Aug. 18 to pay for a gold ring and braid style necklace. The owner of the business called police when the check was returned due to insufficient funds.

When contacted by police, Schaffer denied writing the check and said that she had been the victim of identity theft, according to the report. Police arranged a meeting with her at the store, but Schaffer did not show, according to the report. When subsequent calls to Schaffer were not returned, police prepared a photo lineup from which the jewelry store owner chose Schaffer as the individual who wrote the check.
On Oct. 21, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office authorized the charge against Schaffer. She was arrested Nov. 19 in Calhoun County. Saline Police took her into custody in Battle Creek and transported her to the Washtenaw County Jail.
