Lady Hornet Cagers Win 2nd Straight

Caitlin Ellis led Saline's balanced attack with 10 points.

The Saline High School varsity girls basketball team led from start to finish in a convincing 50-34 win at home against Lincoln Tuesday.

Caitlin Ellis led a balanced attack for the Hornets (4-8), scoring 10 points. She was also a force on the boards. Britten Clark added eight points. Katie Crysler and Melissa Needham each scored six points. Also scoring for the Hornets were Kelsey Pelletier (5 points), Randi Bennett (four points), Emily Reyst, Amanda Price and Alli Cope (three points).

"I felt like we came out with the effort we needed and for us to win games we've got to play our blue collar basketball. I don't think we executed as well as we could have, but I think a lot of that had to do with their ability to penetrate against the zone," said Saline head coach Jeff Waltz. "I'm pleased. It's definitely better than the rough patch we went through. I think we are getting better."

Ellis scored eight of her 10 points in the first half and was a force on the boards.

"We inserted her into the starting lineup a couple games ago and she brings tenacity to the court," Waltz said. "She jumps well and has a nose for the ball. We've got to get her to finish a little better, but she gives us a lot of energy on the offensive end."

Ellis said she's happy to contribute and to see the team gelling.

"I try to be aggressive, make plays and work really hard," said Ellis. "I think we're playing a little better as team now.

The Hornets won their second straight game to improve to 4-8.

Clark said she thinks the team is putting things together.

"We've been through a lot this year. I think we're building momentum and improving," she said.

According to Waltz, the game does not count in the SEC standings.
