Low Prices, Experienced Service Key at Perry's Tuxedo Plus

Saline's newest downtown business held its grand opening Thursday.

Saline rolled out the red carpet for a new business that aims to make men look fit for red carpet events.

Local leaders and business owners were on hand Thursday afternoon as the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the grand opening of Perry’s Tuxedo Plus, a tuxedo rental business owned by Dave Perry. The new business is located at 109 W. Michigan Ave., in the former home of The Calico Cat.

Perry is originally from Adrian, where he spent many years working in his father’s tuxedo business, which is in operation after 21 years. His mother owns another Adrian business, The All Together Bride.

It’s the kind of experience that makes confident he can meet the needs of customers.

“I want to take care of my customers so that they look their best for a special occasion. I’ve got 17 years of experience, both in retail and wholesale, and my dad works in the business and has a ton of expertise I can draw on,” Perry said.

Perry said his customers will be pleased by his prices. He said he has a good deal with his suppliers. And he wants to pass his good deals along to his customers. A student renting an outfit for prom pays $140 to be dressed from head to do.

“A lot of places have ranges. They might have a price they start at. But when you’re finished, you pay three times that. With us, you pay $140 and you get everything, no questions asked,” Perry said.

Wedding tuxedos cost $125, not including shoes.

Perry said he works hard to provide competitive prices.

“The average person rents a tuxedo four to six times in their life. I’d rather make a little less money each time, but have a customer for life, than overcharge and never see them again,” Perry said.

Perry’s has hundreds of different styles to choose from. Customers visiting the store are invited to look through a book of styles.

“We can order from any company. There is not a tuxedo anywhere that I can’t get. If you have something in mind, tell me. If you’ve got a picture, bring it in. We’ll measure you up, order it, and you’ll be good to go,” said Perry.

The process is quick and easy, Perry said. Procrastinators take note, Perry’s can find something for you fast.

“Truthfully, I can find something for you the same day,” Perry said.

For now, tuxedos are the thrust of the business, although the company will also sell varsity jackets. In the future, Perry and his wife, Jennifer, may explore adding a bridal business.

The couple, which has lived in Owosso and Jackson, has three young children in Saline Area Schools. Jennifer, a native of Saline, said she was glad to be home.

“It’s so great to be home. I really wanted to see my kids in Saline’s schools. I had such a great experience and I wanted them to have the same opportunity,” she said.

Perry’s Tuxedo Plus is open from noon to six, Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday.
