Saline Matmen Take 2, Improve to 8-1 in SEC

The wrestling team improved to 8-1 in the SEC Wednesday with convincing wins against Monroe and Dexter.

Saline defeated Monroe 55-13 and Dexter 56-21

Double winners tonight were Taylor Ticknor, Adam Bruley, Ryan Boxeth, Nate O’Sullivan, Dustin Funk, Doug Ayers, Ryan Wellings, and Jason Anthony.

Winning against Monroe were George Lancaster, 285 pounds, void; Angelos Bairactaris, 103 pounds, void; Taylor Ticknor, 112 pounds, 17-2; Adam Bruley, 119 pounds, pin; Ryan Boxeth, 125 pounds, pin; Nate O’Sullivan, 130 pounds, pin; Dustin Funk, 135 pounds, 15-0; Doug Ayers, 145 pounds, 3-2; Ryan Wellings, 152 pounds, 5-4; Chris Slattery, 160 pounds, pin; Jason Anthony, 215 pounds, 3-0.

Winning against Dexter were Ticknor, pin; Bruley, pin; Boxeth, pin; O’Sullivan, pin; Funk, pin; Ayers, pin; Wellings, 15-0; Ryan Nagy, 171 pounds, 10-4; Brandon Helle, 185 pounds, pin; and Anthony, pin.

Hornets Earn Split in SEC Meet

On Jan. 18, Saline hosted Bedford and Adrian. Saline split the contests, falling to Bedford, 51-12, and defeating Adrian 45-28. The loss to Bedford is Saline’s only SEC loss this season.

Against Bedford, Saline lost the opening three matches before Bruley put Saline on the board with a 10-5 victory. Bruley led 2-1 after the first period and 4-3 after two periods before pulling away late in hard-fought match.

O’Sullivan kept the good times rolling with a pin late in the first period of his match. Saline was down 14-9.

Alex Cornelius lost in overtime 9-7. Cornelius had a 4-3 lead after the first and 6-5 lead after the second, but couldn’t hold off his opponent.

Bedford kept the Hornets off the scoreboard until 152 pounds, where Wellings scored takedowns in the first and third periods for a 4-0 win. By then, however, Bedford led 24-12. The Hornets were shutout the rest of the way.

Saline rebounded against Adrian. Ticknor, Boxeth, O’Sullivan, Funk, Cornelius, Ayers, Wellings and Austin Sullivan won for Saline.
