Saline Splits Four Games at Zeeland Water Polo Tournament

Saline defeated Zeeland and East Grand Rapids but lost to East Kentwood and Hudsonville.

The Saline boys' varsity water polo team split four games at the Zeeland Invite over the weekend.

Saline defeated Zeeland, 10-9, and East Grand Rapids, 8-7, and fell to East Kentwood, 10-6, and Hudsonville, 16-6.

Saline opened the tournament Friday with a 10-6 loss to East Kentwood. After the teams played a 6-6 score after two periods, the Hornets were unable to score in the second half. James Fisher scored four times and Lucas Allen tallied twice for Saline. Tom Walls had three steals and an assist. Michael Bundas had two steals and one assist. Will McCullough made eight saves and had two steals.

Saturday, the Hornets rebounded with a 10-9 win over host Zeeland.

Saline exploded for for six first period goals and then watch Zeeland chip away at the lead. Zeeland outscored the Hornets 3-1 in the fourth period to send the game to sudden death overtime, where Allen scored to give Saline the win.

Fisher scored five goals. Allen scored four goals and Lund added a marker. Allen also added two assists and five steals. Fisher had three steals. McCullough made five saves and had two assists.

Later Saturday, the Hornets went to sudden death overtime again, this time beating East Grand Rapids, 8-7. Saline held a 5-3 lead going into the fourth, but East Grand Rapids outscored Saline 4-2 to send the game to overtime. This time, Fisher was the hero. He finished the game with five goals and eight steals. Allen, Walls and Lund also scored for Saline. Allen had three assists and two steals. McCullough made three saves.

The Hornets concluded the tournament with a 16-6 loss to Hudsonville.

Allen scored three goals to lead Saline. Fisher added a pair of goals and Walls scored once. Fisher also had two assists and two steals. Allen had two steals and an assist. McCullough made six stops.
