Szuminski, Owen and DeCook Lead Saline Over Skyline

The Hornets girls' bowling team won its first match of the season Monday.

The varsity bowling team earned its first victory of the season Monday at Colonial Lanes in Ann Arbor, defeating Skyline 22-8.

Samantha Szuminski, Hannah Owen and Emily DeCook each won both of their games to help the Hornets recover from a shaky start in the Baker games.

Coach John Austin said it was a big win for the team.

“Last week we lost a really close one to Tecumseh, who is one of the best teams in the state. So it was nice to win this one,” Austin said.

The Hornets improved to 1-2. They also lost to Pioneer earlier in the season.

Saline started with a 138-107 loss in the first Baker game. The Hornets followed it up with a 122-93 win in the second game, but Skyline was awarded two extra points for winning in total pins, 231-229, and led 6-4 heading into match play.

The Hornets won four of five matches in the first game. Owen defeated her opponent, 126-97, Szuminski won, 141-102, Amber DeJorgle won, 159-11, and DeCook won 142-128. Sydney Ohl lost her match, 130-120. Saline captured eight points in the game to take a 12-7 lead.

Game two was this same story. But this time Szuminski bowled a 235 to win her game by 99. DeCook bowled a strong 180 to defeat her opponent by 166. Also winning were Owen, 125-92, and Ohl, 155—85. DeJorgle lost her game 182-101.

Saline visits Chelsea at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
