‘Isabella, Jacob–Get over Here’ Common Phrase for U.S. Parents

Know a child named Jacob, Isabella or Sophia? In fact, I personally know a few.

But this does not make me unique—those were the most popular baby names in 2010, according to the Social Security Administration.

Nationally, Jacob and Isabella snagged the top spots on the list.

In 2010, Sophia slipped to the No. 2 national spot on the most popular girls names list, but in Michigan the name, evoking Italian beauty icon Sophia Loren, reigned supreme. Sofia, an alternate spelling of the name, was No. 73 on the Michigan list.

Gayle Siciliano, director of , a daycare center on Van Dyke, said she doesn’t have a lot of children with the top-five names on the most popular list. Currently, she has two Sophias and one Jacob.

However, the most popular girls names at her daycare are Jenna, Megan, Chloe and Kayla. As for the boys, Siciliano said “we have quite a few Blakes,” which came in 51st place on Michigan’s list with 248 baby boys named Blake in 2010.

Siciliano said a lot of mothers to-be say they are trying to shy away from trendy names and return to classic, traditional names. Many are naming their children after their grandparents.

Another new trend in the baby-naming world, according to Siciliano, is naming the children in alphabetical order.

“If they have four children the first name would start with the letter A and then B and C and D,” she said.

Previously, the trend was the first letter of all the siblings’ names were the same, for example, siblings named Ava, Audrey and Antonio.
