βWe want to know what items, policies or actions our residents want the township address in 2022 and beyond,β Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis said. βBecause of our priorities, we have new assets such as the Shelby Township Activities Center, and we will open a new 26,000-square-foot library next year. We have these facilities because people took part in our visioning process and told us they were important.β
The township combines the residents' community visioning feedback with input from the Board of Trustees and township employees. Tabulation, which gives all three groups equal weight, sets the townshipβs top 10 priorities.
Administered by the Planning and Zoning Department, the visioning processes are a part of the Board of Trustees' continued efforts to have the government in Shelby Township be more participatory. If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Planning Director Julijana Misich-Rasawehr at 586-726-7243.
βOur residents do a good job communicating immediate needs to our offices, but we rarely hear requests or plans for long-term improvements,β Misich-Rasawehr said. βThe visioning process is a chance for our residents to raise awareness for new issues or ideas for our community.β
Stathakis said that setting the annual priorities is an invaluable tool for the Board to receive direction from the taxpayers and get feedback from community members.
βBecause of the priorities and the support of the residents, our Board has been able to focus on major issues such as improving local roads, reforming township pensions and improving facilities,β Stathakis said. βThis is an amazing opportunity for our residents to tell the local government exactly how they want their tax dollars spent."
