Podcast about mothers' influence concludes with in-person roundtable

Sept. 24 public event reflects on 'A Mother's Perspective' podcast; project created as DEI tool to help a Lansing church engage community

Guests on the podcast A Mother’s Perspective will participate in a concluding, in-person roundtable discussion as they reflect on their interviews and the influences of motherhood.

The 11-episode podcast focuses on how mothers’ perspectives on faith, culture, class, race and parenting impact adult children's interaction with their community. It is available on Spotify at https://bit.ly/MPP-11. Lansing First Presbyterian Church created the project to engage the Greater Lansing community and advance DEI within its congregation.

The reunion event is 11:30 a.m.¬12:45 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 24, Litten Hall, Lansing First Presbyterian Church, 510 W. Ottawa, Lansing 48933. Entry is free with an optional donation to support similar DEI projects in the future. RSVP preferred: psolace@lansingfirstpres.org.

“My mom played such an integral role in my commitment to active service — even helping me overcome my shy nature — that I wanted to explore how other moms have inspired their children,” said Prince Solace, host of A Mother’s Perspective. Solace, director of congregational life and outreach for Lansing First Presbyterian, also produced the podcast with the church.

“Though this podcast looks at family life through multiple lenses, it’s also something we share. We’re not that different. Mothers use their passions to help their children have fulfilling lives and make a positive impact in their communities.”

Important to the project was featuring a diverse group of individuals. Solace selected a mix of members and nonmembers of Lansing First Presbyterian, of persons with traditional and nontraditional families, of ethnicities and of race, as well as a mix of professions — including an entomologist, poet, social activist, politician, author, pastor, marketing entrepreneur and artist.

Those featured on the podcast are Michigan Sen. Sarah Anthony, Dedria Humphries Barker, Willye Bryan, Siso Dhladhla, Anna Marie Horn and Betty Sanford, of Lansing; Greg Botting and Alexis Rosado, Grand Rapids; Queen Darlene, South Haven; Jean Dietrich, Grand Ledge; and Charlie Herrick, Mason.
