Trenton & Downriver Soroptimists Sponsor Human Trafficking Seminar
"Educate, Empower, Eradicate"
Soroptimist International of Trenton and Downriver Area will host a free, informative conference on human trafficking awareness at Summit Academy, 18601 Middlebelt in Romulus, on March 23, 2024. This session is designed for parents, school educators and counselors, health care workers, law enforcement staff, social workers, and community advocates. A variety of guest speakers will share personal experiences and follow with conversations and question-and-answer opportunities.
Clinical and social worker, Joyce Dixson-Haskett, will speak from her personal experience as a victim and survivor after serving seventeen years in prison for killing her trafficker.
Kevin Outlander will share information from his seminar, “The Dark Side of the Web,” that covers topics such as children and the internet, ensnaring children online, social networking and chat rooms, and protecting your family from internet dangers.

Other speakers include Melissa Novock, an FBI victim specialist; and Chrissy Hemphill and Tracey Cooley from Sparrow Freedom Project, a local non-profit, survivor-led community supporting and empowering survivors of human trafficking and exploitation.
Registration is required and limited at https://f8s.co/27sk. The seminar check-in is at 8:30 A.M., with the session running from 9:00 A.M. until 2:15 P.M. Lunch is included.

Trenton and Downriver Area Soroptimist is a volunteer group that offers service by way of fundraising and donations, public awareness/educational programs, and hands-on assistance; as well as presenting yearly monetary awards to individuals to help support and further their future. These women give their time and talents to local food pantries, Vista Maria, First Step, Sparrow Project, Stanford House, Alternatives for Girls, and to area women’s health institutions. They host annual charity fundraisers and programs such as “Save the Girls” motorcycle ride, “Save the Girls” charity golf outing, and the “Dream It, Be It” program for adolescent girls.

The Trenton Soroptimist organization meets at 6:30 P.M. on the first Wednesday of the month at the Woodhaven Community Center. All women are welcome to attend.
