City Council Seats, Charter Amendment Highlight Troy Ballot

Troy residents will be asked to decide on an amendment that would require voter approval for land purchases larger than 2 acres.

TROY, MI — Nov. 7 is an important day for Troy residents. Election Day 2017 will see voters decide on three city council seats as well as decided on a charter amendment and a sinking fund for the Troy Community School District.

Seven candidates are vying for the the three city council seats, including incumbents Ellen Hodorek, Paul McCown and Edward Pennington. Challenging for the seats are Kumar Giri, Mark Gunn, David Hamilton and Sunil Sivaraman.

The charter amendment made the ballot after a petition drive. It approved, it would require the city to get voter approval for the sale, lease, or use for more than 90 days of any parcel of public land greater than two acres.

The sinking fund tax proposal would for buildings and sites. It would pay for improvements and repairs to school district facilities and for the purchase of real estate.

If approved, the proposal would give the district authority to levy one mill for ten years, through June 30, 2028. It’s estimated the levy would raise about $3.74 million.
