Molten Metal Overflow the Cause of a Small Fire in Troy

The Sulzer Metco fire, the second of its type at the location this year alone, did not cause any injuries.

An industrial fire at Sulzer Metco in Troy on Thursday did not cause injuries to anyone on the scene, according to a Troy Fire Department release issued Friday.

Meanwhile, the smelting operations company is taking action to quell a reoccurring issue which resulted in the second fire of the year at its location, 1972 Meijer Drive.

Troy Fire Department Stations #3 and #4 responding to the scene at 2:51 p.m. encountered a small fire caused by molten metal, which had overflowed from its container and was burning. A cardboard box was also ignited.

"The nature of their process is such that an overflow can, and does occasionally occur," said Assistant Chief David Roberts. "The facility is taking steps to prevent future occurrences but must wait for specially manufactured equipment to arrive that will contain any overflow. ... The facility has been inspected by the City of Troy and has been found to be code compliant."
