Letter to the Editor: Troy Mayor 'Must Be Removed as Soon as Possible'

"To retain her tells all that we, the citizens of Troy, endorse her bigotry, prejudices and leadership," writes Troy resident Irv Wengrow.

Dear Editor:

Whether the Mayor should be is a significant step, essentially asking voters whether she should be removed from office prior to the expiration of her term. The only issue before the voters should be what she has done in office that justifies an early exit and whether her continued stay in office is in the best interests of the City of Troy.

First off is the . I do not see this as cause. It was a decision that many agree with, perhaps not a majority, but that is not sufficient grounds for recall. Nor is it the primary reason for the recall, since others voted against it and have not faced a recall. The disturbing element was her statement after the approval vote about moving forward, etc. but then she followed that by being the lone dissenter (without offering any reason) on the , an important element that protects Troy financially.

Her budget vote was also surprising. Again, without explanation, . Her no vote on maintaining our membership in the Michigan Municipal League was perplexing since she then asked for money to attend their event.

Of course the major issue is her attitude about human sexuality. I don't really care about her beliefs. While I disagree, she believes what she believes. But the operative issue has nothing to do with disease or all the other comments and statistics we heard at the June 18 meeting. Her major and unforgivable transgression was who were at the public forum to talk about anti-bullying.

What right does any lay person, in a position of leadership and influence, have discussing human sexuality with our teenagers? Whether the statistics are correct or not is irrelevant to the essential point of the inappropriateness of discussing this subject at all with our children.

Her erratic voting record that most find to be not in the City's best interests is indicative that more will come if allowed to continue to serve. That she saw no fault in her public forum comments to the teenagers seals the deal for me that she must be removed as soon as possible. To retain her tells all that we, the citizens of Troy, endorse her bigotry, prejudices and leadership.
