Suspected Drunken Driver Cuts Off Police Cruiser; Thieves Steal Antique Guns

Thieves break into tobacco store

Officers responded to Wild Bill's Tobacco at 3:40 a.m. Aug. 22 on an activated burglary alarm. Officers arrived and discovered the front door had been pried open and the cash drawer pried open.

The owner arrived and reported that cash and several cartons of cigarettes had been stolen.

Antique guns stolen from garage

A homeowner on the 6000 block of Malvern reported Aug. 22 that someone had broken into his garage and stolen 13 antique guns. Officers noticed the pedestrian door to the garage, where the guns were stored, had been pried open.

Passenger, high on marijuana, flees during traffic stop

A Troy officer on patrol pulled over a vehicle near Dequindre and Wattles at 11:15 p.m. on Aug. 22 after he saw the vehicle swerving and noticed the smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle, according to a media release from the Troy Police Department.

The driver had bloodshot and glassy eyes and smelled slightly of intoxicants, according to the report. When the officer started questioning the passenger, the passenger jumped out of the car and ran away. The officer chased the male but lost sight of him in a Sterling Heights subdivision.

The officer returned to the driver, who said he and his passenger had been smoking marijuana just before being pulled over. The 24-year-old Sterling Heights man failed sobriety tests and was arrested; a blood test was administered and results are pending. 

The passenger who fled has been identified and faces charges of hindering and obstructing a police officer.

Suspected intoxicated driver stops car on roadway, passes out

A Troy police officer responded to the area of Rochester and Wattles roads at 3:20 a.m. Thursday after receiving a report of someone passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle on the roadway.

The officer found the driver asleep behind the wheel with the vehicle running and in "drive." The officer pounded on the window to wake up the driver, who then told the officer he had been in Shelby Township and was on his way to Utica, according to the police report.

The driver, a 27-year-old Shelby Township man who has a previous drinking and driving conviction, smelled of intoxicants, had bloodshot and glassy eyes and failed sobriety tests. He was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated; his preliminary breath test results were 0.11 percent, more than the legal limit of .08 percent.

Police stop vehicle with woman 'hanging out of the sunroof'

Troy Police observed a vehicle in the drive-through lane of a fast food restaurant at Big Beaver and Rochester at 1:20 a.m. on Friday. According to the police report, a woman was hanging out of the sunroof of the car, yelling and giving the finger to another car in line. The car then drove off with the woman still hanging out of the sunroof.

The officer stopped the vehicle. Upon investigation, the officer learned the driver, a 20-year-old Troy man, had been drinking and had a suspended drivers license. The man was arrested for operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content between 0.02 and 0.07 percent, which is illegal in Michigan for individuals under 21. He was also arrested for driving while license suspended. His preliminary breath test results were 0.03 percent.

Suspected intoxicated driver cuts off police cruiser

An officer patrolling the area of Big Beaver and Rochester Road at 2:24 a.m. on Friday observed a vehicle go through a turnaround from northbound to southbound Rochester Road without stopping. The vehicle then cut off the patrol car, which was heading southbound on Rochester Road.

According to the report, the driver smelled of intoxicants, had poor balance, and had bloodshot and glassy eyes. The 23-year-old Troy man was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated; his preliminary breath test results were 0.15 percent. The legal limit is .08 percent.

Thieves steal catalytic converts from multiple vehicles

Several vehicles owners reported having the catalytic converter cut and stolen from their vehicles. The incidents include:

  • A resident on the 1000 block of John R, who reported on Wednesday morning that someone had taken the catalytic converter from his Pontiac Montana.
  • An employee at the Troy Super Vision Center, who reported last Tuesday evening hat someone had stolen the catalytic converter from her Buick.
  • An employee at Hansons Windows, who reported the catalytic converter stolen from his or her 2004 Buick.

Ex boyfriend suspected of vandalizing car at Mon Jin Lau

Officers responded to the popular restaurant at 1:21 a.m. on Friday after someone reported an individual had thrown a rock through a car window and then taken off on foot. The suspect in the case is the ex boyfriend of the vehicle's owner, according to the police report.

Officer searched the area but were unable to find the man at the time. Later that day, officers arrested the 34-year-old Macomb Township man, who faces charges of malicious destruction of property.
