Troy Athens Soccer Team Wins Shootout For The Second Time

Hawks take on Rochester in the state semifinals on Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m.

TROY, MI — The Troy Athens boys' soccer team won the region championship in a nail-biting shootout over Macomb Dakota this afternoon - for the second time.

The first time was Friday, Oct. 28 in an electrifying 3-2 shootout. However, the Hawks' celebration soon turned to controversy. According to Michigan Live, the very next day the Michigan High School Athletic Association learned that referees made a wrong call in Troy Athen's favor. The call in question? Referees ruled a Macomb player's goal was no good since the player shot out of order. However, there isn't a rule that requires players to shoot in any particular order. The verdict? Troy's win was void and the shootout needed to be redone.

Cut to today. Shootout part II. Troy Athens won the shootout 3-2. This time there weren't any questionable calls. Next up? The region champs take on Rochester in the state semifinals at Troy Athens on Wednesday, Nov. 2. at 7:00 p.m.
