Troy Receives SEMCOG Sustainable Community Recognition Program Award

The City of Troy received SEMCOG’s Sustainable Community Recognition Program Award on Monday night. Accepting the award on behalf of the city was Mayor Dane Slater and the entire City Council. The ceremony was part of the City Council meeting, at the Troy City Hall.

Through its Sustainable Community Recognition Program, SEMCOG, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, recognizes member communities that have taken initiative to incorporate sustainable activities into their practices. For local governments, sustainability is about achieving economic prosperity while protecting the environment and providing a high quality of life for residents. SEMCOG-supported initiatives help local governments achieve and maintain sustainability.

The City of Troy has completed many of the recognition program’s eligible activities including:

·         implementing green infrastructure on public property;

·         conducting a road safety audit on the Rochester Road corridor;

·         conducting a walkable/bikeable audit;

·         developing a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Initiative Plan (SWPPI);

·         developing a community Transit Coordination Plan;

·         using SEMCOG data in their planning efforts;

·         distributing SEMCOG public outreach information (Ours to Protect);

·         incorporating low impact development (LID) components into the planning and zoning process;

·         developing an access management plan for Rochester Road;

·         developing an asset management plan for road improvements;

·         using benchmark data; and

·         developing a multi-year budget.

“Troy is a leader in sustainability. SEMCOG commends the city’s efforts and acknowledges this great work through our Sustainable Community Recognition Program Award,” notes SEMCOG Executive Director, Paul Tait. “This recognition further enables Troy to inform residents and business owners about these important sustainable initiatives being implemented throughout the community.”

“On behalf of the City Council and City Administration, we are very proud to accept this award,” Mayor Dane Slater said.  “Our City staff worked very hard to complete the sustainable initiatives and will continue to develop and implement activities protect our environment and maintain the highest quality of life in Troy for our residents.”   

“Troy joins these other SEMCOG members who have also received the Sustainable Community Recognition Program Award – Auburn Hills, Dearborn, Farmington Hills, Green Oak Township, Howell, Livingston County, Novi, St. Clair County, West Bloomfield Township, and Westland.
