Troy Recognizes Alibi Restaurant’s 90 Years With Proclamation

Proclamation honors Troy restaurant's near century in business.

During Monday’s meeting, Troy City Council offered a proclamation honoring The Alibi Restaurant for its 90 years in business. The proclamation begins with a little history: “WHEREAS, A long time ago, in the land where beavers played, there sat a cozy little house with a large front porch and a chicken coop out back. One day the owners decided to turn part of their home into a restaurant and serve country fried chicken to their neighbors.”

The proclamation goes on to lay out the Alibi’s 90 year history. First, it was a small family place, before becoming a spot popular with gangsters: “It was a good place to eat, but even better was the home brew that was made from a still in the cellar.” The business changed hands after prohibition, becoming ever-more respectable, until it was purchased by Glenda and Louis Chires, who have owned the Alibi since 1980.

The proclamation concludes “NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Mayor and City Council of the City of Troy hereby congratulate Louis Chires and his children Linda, Diann, Michael, Cindy, and Lori on the 90th anniversary of The Alibi Restaurant.” Today, the Alibi is known mostly for its pizza, which was featured in the book “Everybody Loves Pizza,” as well as on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
