Two-Alarm Fire Roars Through House While Resident Is Out

A neighbor alerted the Troy Fire Department that the Troy home was in flames.

TROY, MI — A Troy home went up in flames while the resident was reportedly out, Troy fire officials said. A neighbor alerted the Troy Fire Department of a house fire at 2875 Tewksbury on Dec. 23 at 8:17 p.m. Arriving firefighters from Fire Station 6 reported a working fire in the one-story residence, and were told by neighbors that the resident was not home.

The fire proved challenging from the get go. As firefighters started deploying hose lines, it became evident that the fire had spread across the attic, venting in several places along the roof line. This meant the structure was unstable and on the brink of collapse. So, firefighters were ordered out of the home and instead fought the fire using a large master stream nozzle.

As firefighters advanced hose lines into the home to complete extinguishment, they discovered the fire had moved into the floor joists between the first level and the walkout basement, resulting in an unstable first floor. Yet firefighters successfully worked around the unstable floor to extinguish the remaining pockets of fire.

The fire department worked on the scene for over four hours and Fire Station 3 helped with overhaul, because of the large size of the home and the amount of damage.

Fire Department Investigators were called in to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Damage estimates are incomplete however officials report the home appears to be a "total loss."

There were no injuries or fatalities reported to firefighters or civilians.
