Use These Criteria When Shopping for Your Pet's Food

Jack Robbins of Val's Pet Supplies, which has locations in Troy and Clawson, reveals which ingredients to seek when finding food for Fido.

Serving the local community since 1986, Val's Pet Supplies Supervisor Jack Robbins can certainly be considered a local expert on dog food.

That explains why many lists of ingredients give him pause—because the most cost-effective options for manufacturers are not necessarily the most beneficial for Fido's health—as well as why Val's customers have remained loyal for over 25 years.

So, what is best for your dog? Look for ingredients early in the list such as meat, as opposed to "green-based protein," which can be used as a filler.

Robbins also said consumers needn't necessarily pay top dollar for the best foods for their pet. Many independent and family-owned brands, he says, offer a top-notch product at a cost comparable to similar portions of name-brand foods.
