VIDEO: Troy City Council Members React Strongly to Mayor's Gay Slur on Facebook

Following more than four hours of public comment Monday night, Troy City Council members themselves addressed Mayor Janice Daniels over her controversial Facebook post.

After more than four long hours of public comment, Troy City Council members finally got a chance to address the mayor.

"If there was nothing there for them to find, we wouldn't be sitting here," Councilman Jim Campbell said. "You were wrong, and you know you were wrong. You embarrassed the city."

Councilman Dane Slater asked for clarification on what action might be taken by Council. The answer: Not much besides a censure

Other council members expressed their disappointment in the mayor for her actions, but also took aim at the individuals or groups that unearthed the June posting on Facebook.

"The word was inappropriate, but the way it was handled was wrong as well," Councilman Wade Fleming said. "The city does not deserve this reputation."

Mayor Pro Tem Maureen McGinnis discussed revision of the council's code of ethics to add points cautioning all elected officials from using electronic communication that may be derogatory. McGinnis pointed out that the previous council members all signed the code in October 2010 but that it had not been signed since the mayor and two new members, Dave Henderson and Doug Tietz, joined the council in November. She urged that this take place as soon as possible.

McGinnis added that she was "disappointed." "I think that we're better than this," McGinnis said. "I'm proud of the people who came out to speak tonight, I'm proud of the emails that I've received, although some of them made me feel really bad about what I'm a part of up here."

Addressing Daniels, she said: "You are in your seat because you got voted in by your consituents and those are the people that ultimately may decide to not vote for you in the future or take some other recourse. But I think in the interim we have to step up to the plate and take a stand on the fact that something like this cannot be tolerated."
