No Charges Filed In Oakland County House Fire That Killed 3 Kids: Report

Investigators still do not know what caused the fire.

WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI — Prosecutors will not file charges in an Oakland County fire that killed three kids earlier this year, according to a WDIV report.

Three siblings, a 16-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy, were inside a home in the 5000 block of Pembury Lane in West Bloomfield Township on Feb. 2 when it caught fire in the evening, according to police.

When the home caught fire, police said the eldest child called 911 and told officials they were trapped inside. Police said the parents were at work and no one else was inside the home.

Fire crews eventually forced their way into the home and found the children, who were all taken to a nearby hospital where they died, according to police.

The Detroit Free Press reported the parents put special locks on the doors and windows because the middle child had a severe form of autism and had been known to leave the home unattended.

Investigators still do not know what caused the fire. They also said there were no smoke alarms inside the home and that the parents did cooperate with the investigation.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said the incident was a tragedy and not a crime.

"The security measures in the home were the result of a caring and expert-informed effort to protect the two boys, who were both autistic," McDonald said. "When you take a step back, it’s clear this is the story of two parents who took the necessary steps to try to protect their kids and support their family under challenging circumstances."
