Hood's Installs Solar Panels on Roof

Wyandotte store goes green and reduces its carbon footprint.

To honor Earth Day, wants to harness the sun to go green.

Hood’s has partnered with Cresit Energy of Wyandotte to install 48 solar panels on the store’s rooftop, according to a press release.

In addition, the project will include upgrading the heating and cooling units as well as improving the exterior lighting to make them more energy efficient. The lighting improvements are expected to make them 30-50 percent more efficient.

The upgrades are made possible in part thanks to grants from the city of Wyandotte and the federal government, according to the release.

Hood’s estimates that the store will collect energy 330 days a year with a 12-kilowatt system.

The release said Hood's "power plant" intake of solar power, fed to the Wyandotte grid, will be monitored via Internet on a constant basis.

Hood’s has been based in Wyandotte for more than 65 years.
