Wyandotte Roosevelt Students to 'Stand Up for Others' at Third Friday

Roosevelt High School students designed and created a T-shirt to raise anti-bullying awareness, which will be available for purchase this Friday in downtown Wyandotte.

If you're wondering where you can find a bright, orange T-shirt designed and made by Wyandotte Roosevelt High School students to raise awareness for a new anti-bullying program, look no further.

Students and staff will be on hand this Friday at Wyandotte's monthly Third Friday celebration selling T-shirts near the clock tower downtown.

The anti-bullying program, which began at the start of the 2012-13 school year, was designed to encourage students to treat each with respect, according to Ben Reynolds, assistant principal at Roosevelt.

On the back of the shirt is the slogan: “Strong people stand up for themselves. Stronger people stand up for others.”

Students have sold over 1,100 shirts, and all proceeds go to making even more shirts.

Elissa Cumiskey, marketing teacher at Roosevelt, said students created the shirts to raise awareness--not money.

The shirts cost about $10 to make and are sold for the same amount, according to Cumiskey.

Anyone interested can pre-order a shirt at anytime, and a business created in Cumiskey's apparel and merchandising class, WyandotteTees.com, makes them.

Several students assisted in designing the anti-bullying shirt.

Shirts were handed out to Wyandotte city officials at a recent City Council meeting.

"The city is fully on board with this important message," Mayor Joseph Peterson said.
