MAPLE GROVE, MN — Shake Shack opened its first drive-thru restaurant in the U.S. on Monday in Maple Grove.

The new location at the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes is the fourth Shake Shack in the Twin Cities metro, with other locations at the Mall of America, Southdale Mall and the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Shake Shack's first-ever drive-thru features separate kitchens to keep lines moving inside and outside, while diners can also pre-order through the Shake Shack app or its website to reduce their wait.

Shake Shack CEO Randy Garutti said in a news release that the company will be “learning a lot” from the Maple Grove location as it prepares to open up to 10 new drive-thrus next year.

“Our Maple Grove opening is a huge step forward for our brand,” Garutti said.

The company said it has focused on adding drive-thrus and making its restaurants more accessible for guests as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The franchise is set to donate $1 for each sandwich sold on opening day in Maple Grove to CROSS Services, a Minnesota nonprofit that helps families and people experiencing food insecurity and housing and job instability.

The new location will also be giving away items Monday to celebrate its opening.

The Maple Grove Shake Shack will be allowed to serve alcohol after securing a liquor license from the city in October.
