Hennepin County Attorney Race 2022: Live Election Results

HENNEPIN COUNTY, MN — The polls have closed in Hennepin County, and results have started to come in for the county attorney race. Patch will provide live coverage of the results Tuesday night.

Seven candidates are vying to replace outgoing Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman. Following the results of Tuesday's election, the top two candidates in the nonpartisan race will go on to compete against each other in November's general election.

Freeman announced in the fall of 2021 that he would not seek reelection after spending 14 years in the role. During Freeman's time as the county's chief prosecutor, he oversaw charging decisions in a number of high-profile cases involving Minneapolis police officers, including the 2020 killing of George Floyd by former officer Derek Chauvin.

Other cases during his tenure include the shooting death of Justine Ruszczyk Damond by former officer Mohamed Noor in 2017 and the shooting death of Jamar Clark by officer Dustin Schwarze in 2015.

Freeman decided not to file charges against the officer involved in Clark's death, which drew severe criticism and protests from activists.

Freeman did file charges — and ultimately won convictions against — Noor and Chauvin.

Rising violent crime and systemic injustice in Hennepin County are the top issues facing Tuesday's candidates:

• Mary Moriarty — Hennepin County Chief Public Defender from 2014-2020
• Saraswati Singh — Prosecutor in the Ramsey County Attorney's Office
• Martha Holton Dimick — Retired Hennepin County District Judge
• Jarvis Jones — Attorney, previously served as head of the county and state bar association
• Ryan Winkler — Minnesota House majority leader
• Tad Jude — Retired Washington County District Judge

Mary Moriarty won the DFL's endorsement. Martha Holton Dimick and Ryan Winkler were both endorsed by the Star Tribune.
