Maple Grove Boys Hockey Wins Section Title, Back In State Tourney

Maple Grove beat Rogers in the Section 5AA championship game Thursday to book its ticket to the Class AA state tournament.

MAPLE GROVE, MN — The Maple Grove boys hockey team will launch its quest for another state championship next week after taking down Rogers on Thursday night to win the Section 5AA title.

The Crimson beat Rogers 4-2 in its seventh straight appearance in the sectional title game. Junior Finn Brink put Maple Grove ahead in the first period before senior Joshua Giuliani doubled the team’s lead early in the second period.

Rogers scored later in the second period, but Maple Grove’s Landen Gunderson responded with a goal just 40 seconds after to restore the Crimson’s two-goal cushion, according to statistics on the MN Boys Hockey Hub.

Rogers closed the gap with a goal early in the third period, but Maple Grove again struck back quickly, with senior Bennet Glad putting his team up 4-2 and out of reach for the Royals.

The Crimson will now move onto the state tournament for the third year in a row. Maple Grove fell in the state semifinal game to Eden Prairie last year.

Maple Grove is scheduled to play March 10 in the Class AA state quarterfinals. The team's opponent had not been determined as of Friday afternoon.
