Maple Grove Eliminates 9 Precincts After 2022 Redistricting

The number of voting precincts in Maple Grove will drop from 24 to 15, with officials expecting more absentee voters over the coming years.

MAPLE GROVE, MN — Maple Grove officials recently approved a slew of changes to the city's voting precincts after Minnesota’s 2022 redistricting process was finalized in February.

The number of voting precincts in Maple Grove will drop from 24 to 15, with the changes to take effect for the Aug. 9 primary. At 15 remaining polling places have been used in previous elections.

Maple Grove is reducing the number of polling places due to the “continuing trend for absentee voting, which greatly reduces the number of Election Day voters in polling places,” administration officials said in a memo to the City Council.

About 35 percent of 45,344 Maple Grove residents who cast votes in the 2020 general election voted in person on Election Day, officials said.

All of Maple Grove has been in the Third Congressional District since the previous redistricting process in 2012, and no changes were made in Maple Grove in the new maps produced by the Minnesota Special Redistricting Panel.

However, Minnesota House and Senate districts were renumbered throughout the state, including in Maple Grove. Most of Maple Grove will be included in Minnesota House Districts 37A and 37B, though a small portion of the city — south of Bass Lake Road and west of Vicksburg Lane — will be in House District 42A.

Maple Grove’s population has grown by almost 20,000 people since the 2000 Census, according to a memo from administration officials to the City Council.

The city’s population was recorded as 50,365 in the 2000 Census, 61,567 in the 2010 Census and 70,253 people in the 2020 Census, according to the memo.
