Phillips Seeks $2M For Maple Grove Hospital Emergency Room Expansion

MAPLE GROVE, MN — North Memorial Health Care could be in line to get millions of dollars in federal funding to support an expansion of the emergency department at Maple Grove Hospital.

Rep. Dean Phillips requested $2 million in federal funds to help cover planning and design costs for a future expansion project.

The emergency department at Maple Grove Hospital was designed to serve about 25,000 patients per year, but there have been more than 40,000 patients annually for the past several years, Phillips said.

“Further exacerbating the increased demand is the timing of patient visits; most patients arrive in the late afternoon, leading to extreme crowding and affecting throughout the department,” Phillips said.

Initial expansion plans include doubling the number of patient-care rooms, adding a triage room and building about 10 new observation rooms, according to the representative. The expansion would more than double the overall area of the Maple Grove Hospital emergency department, Phillips said.

Members of Congress can request funding for up to 15 specific projects in their districts that "serve the public good" as part of the appropriations process.

Phillips also requested $2.75 million for the Highway 610 Extension Project in Maple Grove.
