State-Title Bid Ends Early For Maple Grove Girls Hockey Team

MAPLE GROVE, MN — The Maple Grove girls hockey team’s quest for a state title came to an end in the quarterfinal round Thursday after a 2-1 loss to Gentry Academy.

Crimson junior Stella Retrum opened the scoring 6 minutes, 50 seconds into the second period before Gentry Academy’s Jenessa Gazdik equalized later in the period.

Gentry’s Campbell Hegar sunk Maple Grove’s state-title hopes with a goal in the third period.

The Crimson pulled its goalie with just under two minutes left in the game but could not find a goal to force overtime, according to a report by the Minnesota State High School League.

Maple Grove finished the game with 22 shots on goal, while Gentry Academy ended with 32 shots on goal, the report states.

Gentry Academy advanced to the Class AA state semifinal, while Maple Grove faced off Friday against Brainerd in consolation play.

Maple Grove beat Brainerd 3-0, with two goals by Retrum and one from Audrey Mlekoday. The Crimson is scheduled to play Burnsville at noon Saturday in the next round of consolation play.
