📰 News we're reading

1. St. Paul officers shoot, injure man who allegedly stole car, pointed gun at police (kstp.com) — A car reported stolen in Minneapolis on Sunday led to a police shooting on I-94 in St. Paul after the driver allegedly pointed a gun at officers. The man was shot in the leg and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while a woman passenger was arrested. Several I-94 ramps were temporarily closed as state investigators review the officers’ use of force.

2. Flu cases in Minnesota spike just as holiday travel begins (kstp.com) — Flu cases are surging across Minnesota just as holiday travel ramps up, and a Children’s Minnesota clinic in Minneapolis is reinstating masking to protect vulnerable kids. Local pediatric leaders warn the dominant H3N2 strain can hit young children and seniors hardest, urging residents to get vaccinated, stay hydrated if sick, and consider masks and quick doctor visits, especially before flying.

3. Judge denies third trial for man convicted in Minneapolis realtor's murder (fox9.com) — A man convicted in the killing of Minneapolis real estate agent Monique Baugh has been denied a third trial and now faces mandatory life in prison without parole. The judge rejected claims of due-process violations and criticized fabricated legal quotes in the defense motion. The case stems from Baugh’s 2019 kidnapping and fatal shooting, which began with a fake home showing and ended in a Minneapolis alley.

4. ICE agent fires shots at man after being hit by SUV (hawaiinewsnow.com) — Federal immigration tensions in our metro escalated this week, with ICE agents clashing with protesters in Minneapolis and an ICE officer in nearby St. Paul firing shots after being struck by an SUV. Officials say the Cuban man involved, who allegedly rammed ICE vehicles and tried to flee, was not hit by gunfire, and all injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.

5. ACLU-MN and Maslon LLP Clients sue Freeborn County for 'illegal' agreement with ICE (kttc.com) — Minneapolis-based ACLU of Minnesota is backing a lawsuit claiming Freeborn County illegally used local tax dollars to support a federal immigration-enforcement agreement with ICE. The case challenges a 287(g) deal the sheriff signed in March, arguing it violates Minnesota law and the state constitution by enabling civil immigration arrests and ICE detentions after state custody ends. The outcome could influence how other Minnesota counties handle cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
