📰 News we're reading

1. Driver charged in fiery, fatal St. Paul crash says she was distracted by fast food bag (twincities.com) — A 35-year-old driver is charged with criminal vehicular homicide after a fiery early-morning crash at Arlington and Prosperity in St. Paul killed 26-year-old mother of four Qiara “Keke” Gleason. Prosecutors say she was distracted by fast food and had been drinking; Gleason’s family, already touched by past tragedies, has launched a fundraiser to support her young children now in their grandmother’s care.

2. St. Paul: Development Corp. buys vacant Empire Building, Endicott Arcade (twincities.com) — A key vacant block in downtown St. Paul has been snapped up by the St. Paul Downtown Development Corporation, which plans to “reimagine” the Empire Building and Endicott Arcade along 5th Street. Backed by private investors, the group is gathering community input through an online survey open through Jan. 31 to guide how these long-empty properties could better connect Mears and Rice parks.

3. Review: Duluth music heroes treat St. Paul to rare pairing (startribune.com) — St. Paul music fans just saw a rare collaboration at the Fitzgerald Theater, where Duluth favorites Alan Sparhawk and Trampled by Turtles shared the stage for a sold-out show. The 90-minute set centered on Sparhawk’s new album with the band, blending electric indie rock and acoustic strings. The emotionally charged performance, rooted in Sparhawk’s recent loss, still found room for humor and musical surprises.

4. Minneapolis City Council OKs homeless encampment plan requiring bathrooms, fire extinguishers (startribune.com) — Minneapolis has approved a contentious ordinance to add toilets, fire extinguishers, and other basic services at homeless encampments, even as the mayor threatens a veto. For St. Paul residents, the move highlights regional differences, since St. Paul already provides porta-potties and dumpsters at major camps despite not formally sanctioning them, raising questions about how both cities will manage encampments this winter.

5. Minneapolis Passes Beefed-Up Sanctuary Law, Citing ‘City Values' as ICE Arrests Mount (noqreport.com) — Minneapolis has strengthened its sanctuary city ordinance, barring local staff from helping federal immigration enforcement and requiring annual training, a move that could influence how similar policies are viewed in nearby St. Paul. As ICE’s “Operation Metro Surge” ramps up arrests across the Twin Cities, state leaders and local advocates are clashing with federal officials over tactics, civil rights, and who should feel safe in the region.
