Missouri Connections Academy Recognizes Jackson County Students

Student of the Month Award recognizes achievements in and out of the virtual classroom

Zoey Howard and Bella Peterson of Kansas City, and Alysha Rose of Grandview, were recently selected to be among Missouri Connections Academy’s (MOCA) Students of the Month for January in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the virtual classroom.

“Our students of the month demonstrate leadership and an extraordinary commitment to learning while serving as strong role models for their peers,” said Lynsie Hunt, School Leader at Missouri Connections Academy. “The members of our faculty and staff are proud to give these virtual classroom leaders the recognition they deserve.”

Zoey, a first grader, Bella, a fifth grader, and Alysha, an eighth grader, were each nominated by their teachers at the statewide, tuition-free, online public school. As a Student of the Month, all three will receive a certificate of achievement and be profiled in the Missouri Connections Academy student newsletter and the school’s social media platforms. Each month during the school year, MOCA will recognize students in grades K through 12 who are excelling in the virtual classroom.

Zoey enrolled in Missouri Connections Academy at the beginning of the academic year to be in a safe learning environment. According to her mother, Carrie, Zoey is doing well in her classes and really enjoys the online environment.

“This is the best learning experience ever,” Carrie said. “We love how caring all of the teachers and staff are and how the learning is pretty much based on your own pace.”

Bella also enrolled in Missouri Connections Academy this year after previously attending Kansas Connections Academy. Her mother Trishia said they wanted to stay with the Connections because they like having a flexible schedule, an individualized approach and having one teacher for their core classes.

“This is a great fit for our kids who are very particular in their learning,” she said.

Alysha has been attending Missouri Connections Academy since 2020. According to her mother Alaysha, the online environment better met her individual needs and her teachers helped to build and strengthen Alysha’s time management skills and improve her self-confidence.

“Alysha is hard working, passionate, and selfless and always tries so hard to do her best,” Alaysha said. “She is passionate about learning and is always willing to grow.”

Virtual school is a great fit for a variety of students and each student is unique. Those who attend Missouri Connections Academy come from different backgrounds and choose full-time online school for various reasons. Some students prefer to take ownership of their education and benefit from the flexibility that virtual school offers, while others are looking for a safe learning environment.

Enrollment for Missouri Connections Academy for the 2023-24 academic year opens on March 6th and the school will be hosting online information sessions for families interested in learning more about virtual education.
