Missouri Connections Academy Recognizes Local Students

Student of the Month Award recognizes achievements in and out of the virtual classroom

SPRINGFIELD, MO Addie Atkerson of Lee’s Summit, and Dhab Mahgoub of Kansas City, were recently named Missouri Connections Academy’s (MOCA) Students of the Month for September in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the virtual classroom.

“Our students of the month demonstrate leadership and an extraordinary commitment to learning while serving as strong role models for their peers,” said Lynsie Hunt, School Leader at Missouri Connections Academy. “The members of our faculty and staff are proud to give these virtual classroom leaders the recognition they deserve.”

Addie, a first grader at the statewide, tuition-free, online public school, was nominated as Student of the Month by her teacher, Mrs. Barnard, in recognition of her hard work and her kindness towards others. According to Addie’s mother, Emily, they enrolled in Minnesota Connections Academy this year to be in a safe learning environment with an advanced curriculum that keeps her daughter challenged.

“I feel like the subject matter that she gets from the MOCA lessons is so much better than what we've seen with other curriculums and schools in our area,” Emily said. “Online learning has been great.”

Dhab, is in the second grade at Missouri Connections Academy. She also came to the online school this year because her parents wanted her to be in a learning environment with access to supportive teachers. Dhab was nominated for the award by her teacher Ms. Schroeder because of the outstanding attitude she brings to class.

“Dhab always has such a great attitude and works so hard. She is a fantastic student and a positive presence in our class,” Ms. Schroeder said. “Dhab is an excellent reader and volunteered to read a book to our class while students were coming into the LiveLesson room."

As a Student of the Month, both Addie and Dhab will receive a certificate of achievement and be profiled in the Missouri Connections Academy student newsletter and the school’s social media platforms. Each month during the school year, MOCA will recognize students in grades K through 12 who are excelling in the virtual classroom.

Virtual school is a great fit for a variety of students and each student is unique. Those who attend Missouri Connections Academy come from different backgrounds and choose full-time online school for various reasons.
