Brenna Luevano with Hillcrest Transitional Housing and Hillcrest Thrift Store Overland Park has some tips to help:
- Best day to go shopping? On Mondays. Many people drop off donations on Saturday, and the new items are sorted on Sundays, and on display in the stores by Monday.
- Every thrift store has sales. At Hillcrest Thrift Store Overland Park, there is a Super Sale on Wednesdays in which veterans, first responders, and those over 55 receive 25 percent off. The First Saturday Sales have a discount of 50 percent off throughout the store, and holiday sales are anywhere from 25 to 50 percent off.
- Glassware! How to tell the difference between glass and crystal? It’s all in the “ding”! Flick the glass and if it’s a pretty, sing-songy sound, that’s crystal.
Even better than the thrill of unique finds, every purchase from Hillcrest Thrift Store Overland Park directly benefits Hillcrest Transitional Housing, which helps to solve homelessness in Kansas City. Hillcrest Transitional Housing is a local nonprofit that works to move individuals and unaccompanied youth from homelessness to self-sufficiency through five residential sites in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
