Here are the top three stories in Bozeman today:

  1. A student from Chief Joseph Middle School in Bozeman has been detained in a juvenile detention facility in another city after bringing a knife to school and threatening other students on May 3. The student is facing charges of assault with a weapon and assault on a peace or judicial officer, and the number of counts for each offense is still being investigated. Bozeman Public Schools has offered ongoing counseling services to students who may have been impacted by the incident. (KBZK News)
  2. Dave's Sushi plans to reopen after the Gallatin City-County Health Department finishes its investigation into a possible foodborne illness on May 15. The owner, Aaron Parker, stated the restaurant will exceed health safety standards when it reopens and that he is more concerned about the safety of the community and employees than his own feelings. The investigation indicates that food containing morel mushrooms may be the exposure of concern, and the restaurant has stopped serving them. (KBZK News)
  3. Bozeman School District Superintendent Casey Bertram has revealed that the district will cut 20 certified teachers as part of budget cuts aimed at addressing a $4.1 million budget shortfall. Bertram stated that the district's plan is to use Plan A, which involves shallower cuts but still requires teacher reductions. However, Bertram believes that most, if not all, of the staff reductions will come through attrition, as redesigning middle and high school schedules will reduce the need for teachers, and the district will let retirements and resignations shake out first before filling open positions.
