Las Vegas Shooting: Police Release New Details

Sheriff Joe Lombardo announced the release of a preliminary investigative report related to the Las Vegas shooting on Friday.

LAS VEGAS, NV - Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Joe Lombardo addressed the Las Vegas shooting for the first time in three months, announcing at a press conference on Friday the release of a preliminary investigative report into the worst mass shooting in modern United States history. Among the details of the report are updated injury totals - 422 people suffered gunshot related injuries and 851 in total suffered injuries directly related to the shooting. Lombardo also announced that charges could be brought against an unidentified individual within the next 60 days, but couldn't elaborate on what that meant.

"That's part of the recent litigation," Lombardo said, referencing a lawsuit filed by several media companies against the department for the release of documents related to the event. A hearing was held on Monday and is now up to the decision of a District Court judge.

"That decision is going to be made by the court here shortly, but I cannot give you any more information," about the involvement of the individual facing potential charges, Lombardo said.

Lombardo also said Marilou Danley, the girlfriend of gunman Stephen Paddock, will not be facing charges related to her potential involvement in the case. Search warrant documents unsealed last week showed Danley to be a focal point of investigators in the early stages of the investigation.

Police were unable to retrieve a missing hard drive from a computer found in the 32nd floor suite of the Mandalay Bay where Paddock carried out the attack, but in reviewing his digital footprint investigators found "disturbing" content, such as inquiries into ballistics and SWAT gear as well as the discovery of child pornography, Lombardo said.

The details are all included in a preliminary investigative report released on Friday, which Lombardo said was a departure from normal department practice in which a report is issued only after an investigation has been completed. The investigation has involved 2,000 leads and the review of over 21,560 hours of video so far, Lombardo said.

Among what the contents of the 81-page preliminary investigative report are:

  • An overview of the incident
  • Details leading up to the shooting, beginning on Sept. 17, when Paddock checked into The Ogden in Downtown Las Vegas until police entered his hotel room on Oct. 1.
  • An overview of Paddock
  • A detail account of Paddock's search history
  • Specifics about the police response to the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay
  • Details of what happened at the concert venue
  • Items of evidence collected from various scenes
  • Findings of the investigation that include "certain indicators of intent" revealed by Paddock's actions leading up to Oct. 1.
  • Photographs from the Paddock's hotel room

This is a developing story and will be updated to include more specific details included in the preliminary investigative report.
