1. Las Vegas offering free trees to residents in these ZIP codes (8newsnow.com) — Las Vegas residents in select ZIP codes can now apply for a free drought-tolerant shade tree, including planting and an irrigation system, thanks to $5 million in federal funding. The program targets neighborhoods hit hardest by urban heat and supports the city’s Urban Forestry goal of planting 60,000 trees by 2050. Applications are available online through the city.
   

2. UNLV opens Nevada's first formal cleft palate clinic, filling critical care gap (fox5vegas.com) — UNLV has opened Nevada’s first dedicated cleft palate and craniofacial clinic in Las Vegas, giving Southern Nevada families long-missing local access to comprehensive care. The modern facility serves patients with cleft conditions and other developmental disabilities, accepts Medicaid and other insurance, and was funded in part by state legislation to rebuild UNLV’s specialized craniofacial team.
   

3. New traffic unit targets bad drivers around Las Vegas universities: ‘When is enough, enough?' (8newsnow.com) — A new University Police traffic unit is now patrolling around UNLV and College of Southern Nevada to crack down on speeding, impaired, and unregistered drivers near Las Vegas campuses. Sparked by past fatal crashes, the three-officer team will work with Metro and state police to target dangerous driving during busy class and business hours, aiming to prevent more deaths on valley roads.
   

4. Las Vegas allocates $18M to boost homelessness services and health initiatives (news3lv.com) — Las Vegas is putting more than $18 million into homelessness services and health and wellness programs for the 2024–25 fiscal year, with nearly $11 million going to operate The Courtyard shelter. The plan funds mental health care, recuperative services, and outreach, while Mayor Shelley Berkley also pushes back against potential federal HUD cuts and backs a proposed 400-bed facility for homeless veterans.
   

5. francis kéré plans las vegas art museum with canyon-like interiors (designboom.com) — Las Vegas is set to get its first freestanding art museum, planned for Symphony Park as a 60,000-square-foot cultural hub serving locals and visitors. Designed by Kéré Architecture with canyon-like interiors and shaded plazas, the Las Vegas Museum of Art will draw on Mojave Desert landscapes and local modernist history, with an opening targeted for 2029.
