UNLV Shooting Suspect Identified After 3 Killed On Campus: Reports

LAS VEGAS, NV — The suspected gunman who killed three people Wednesday at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, campus before being shot to death by police has been identified, according to multiple reports which cite authorities.

Anthony Polito, 67, had applied to be a college professor at UNLV but did not get the job, ABC News reported.

Polito worked as an associate professor at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, from Aug. 2001 through Jan. 2017, according to his LinkedIn profile.

His profile describes him as a "Semi-Retired University Professor" from Las Vegas.

In addition to the four victims shot, three fatally and the fourth critically, four people were taken to hospitals due to symptoms of panic attacks, Las Vegas Metro Sheriff Kevin McMahill said, according to CNN. Two law enforcement officers suffered minor injuries while searching for victims, the sheriff said.

Around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said the suspect was contained. About five minutes later, police said the gunman was "located and is deceased."

The university previously said that campus police were responding to a "confirmed active shooter in BEH." Las Vegas police said they were also responding to reports of an active shooter on campus near BEAM Hall.

Officials also reported additional shots fired in the Student Union. That building was told to evacuate.

"This is not a test. RUN-HIDE-FIGHT," a campus alert said.

Videos posted on Twitter showed law enforcement rushing the campus as sirens blared.

A ground stop was issued at Harry Reid International Airport following the shooting, according to the FAA.
