Here are the top 3 stories in Bedford today:

  1. Is Bed Bath and Beyond closing in Bedford? The popular home goods and household retailer announced that they will be closing 56 "lower producing locations," including stores in New Hampshire and Maine. But the Bed Bath and Beyond store in Bedford was not on the list! Other stores that will stay open include Portsmouth and Nashua. (Seacoast Current)
  2. Moderate income families will qualify for fuel assistance this winter. Leaders in both parties approved a bill to spend the state's $42 million budget surplus to increase the income limit for fuel assistance, so more families this winter will be eligible. Senate Majority Leader Jeb Bradley, (R-Wolfeboro), said the fuel assistance program limit for a family of four was $72,000. This bill would raise the limit to $90,000 for the same family. Residents can apply for the state fuel assistance benefit through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) program. (Subscription/The Union Leader)
  3. Why no one knows what will happen in November: "Will Republicans win the Senate? Can Democrats keep the House?" Most political observers say the answer this time is maybe. It's an unusual place to be compared to previous midterm cycles, when by mid-September, Republicans and Democrats usually have a sense of where things are headed. With inflation persistently high, despite low gas prices, and the President's low approval ratings earlier in the summer, many political observers were waiting for a red wave. But after the midterm elections, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said, "if Republican primary voters choose candidates that alienate the general electorate, they could lose many winnable races."
